Timeline

As recorded by LCC Secretary, Robert Richardson.

In 2010-2011, we hosted a Fall Open House: Learn-to-Curl and a Mini-Spiel (October 11-13 and October 17).  The Mini-Spiel was opened by Curling Olympian Mike Peplinski pictured below in a pensive moment during the curling competition at the XVIII Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.  The LCC sponsored monthly curling instrution events on "2nd Wednesdays of our Winter months."  The members scribed house and lines into the ice surface each time we curled!  During 2010-2011, we taught over 500 individuals the skills and arts of curling on ice!  We hosted a Winter Rec Fest event on February 2, 2011, with a record attendance.  We closed the inaugural return year with a LCC-Spiel for our new curlers: March 14, 2011.

In 2011-2012, we opened the curling season with lines and house-perimeter lines embedded in the ice!  We sent all 4 sets (64) of our stones to North Dakota for re-conditioning - bringing them back to competition readiness.  We borrowed a fifth set of stones from the Centerville Curling Club.  And, we curled every Wednesday evening - in two shifts (6:30-8:30pm; 8:30-10:30pm). We hosted a Winter Rec Fest Youth Curl in January.  We closed the 2011-2012 curling season with The Mississippi River Open bonspiel the first weekend in March - with teams representing the Northwestern University Curling Club, the St. Paul Curling Club, the Rice Lake Curling Club, the Centerville Curling Club, and the La Crosse Curling Club.  We all continue to learn about Arena Curling!

In 2012-2013, we opened with lines and house buttons embedded in the ice!  We curl in legues on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings.  We hosted an Open House on October 10, 2012, and on December 26, 2012.  We sponsored two Winter Rec Fest events - one for youth and one for adults.  During the first weekend in March, 2013, we will host our 2nd annual bonspiel: the Mississippi River Open in La Crosse.

In 2013-2014, we added an additional night of curling - thereby adding space for 40 additional curlers.  We initiated our collegiate curling outreach; the UW-L Curling Club received approval to operate as a RSO (Registered Student Organization).  We curled from the last day of September through mid-March.  We introduced "skills development clinics" to improve LCC members' curling skills; for these we hosted Curling Olympian Debbie Mc Cormick.  We moved our bonspiel to the second weekend of March (7-9).  We activated our status as a Member Club in the USCA. In May, our club won the cheer station contest at the Festival Foods Grandad Half Marathon!  We sent our women's team to the 2014 National Arena Curling Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Toni Paisley, Laura Mitchell, Sydney Schieffer, and Erin Hofland returned from the NACC with Silver Medals!

In 2014-2015, we opened the year early to celebrate the accomplishments of our Women's Team.  Then, we presented a stunning entry in the Oktoberfest Torchlight Parade; our glow-stick drill team and our flashing/blinking stone display atop the truck was a stunning hit. We continued to fill our four sessions with active curlers representing ages 8 to 80!  We ended the year with our 4th Bonspiel - expanded to 28 teams.  We won "Best Cheer Station" during the Fitness Festival.

We sent our Women's team and our Men's team to the 2015 National Arena Curling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Seth King, Brad Heitzman, Chris Hofland, and Sam Wood faced some well-seasoned opponets during their matches.  The women faced some repeat and previously victorious opponents BUT Toni Paisley, Laura Mitchell, Erin Hofland, and Laura Meyer returned from the NACC with Silver Medals!

In 2015-2016, we added an additional night of curling - thereby adding space for another 40 additional curlers. We added a developmental component devoting one session of curling to "Adult Learn-to-Curl" and coaching programs for our young curlers.  We strive to increase our membership /active curler base to 200!  We sent a men's team (Seth King, Bill Crail, Russ Kludy, and Mark Swart) to the 2016 National Arena Curling Championships in West Chester, PA.  We also won our third consecutive cheer station award at the Festival Foods Grandad Half Marathon!
